چکیده مقاله:

Background: There is an assumption that fetus with restricted growth with an inappropriate intrauterine environment lies under stress. Although small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants have higher mortality, difference in the outcome of SGA and appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) infants regarding respiratory morbidity is controversial. It seems that respiratory morbidities in SGA neonates is different from neonates with AGA. In this study, we intend to compare the mortality and  respiratory morbidity rates between the preterm small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for age (AGA) neonates of less than 34 weeks of gestation. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 498 preterm neonates with gestational age of < 34 weeks, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. These neonates were categorized into two groups of SGA (n=210) and AGA (n=286). The data analysis was performed, using Student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney U test for parametric variables and Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests for nonparametric data. Results: According to the results of the study, the two groups were significantly different in terms of their birth weight (P

Comparisons of mortality and pre-discharge respiratory outcomes in small-for-gestational-age and appropriate-for-gestational-age premature infants

BACKGROUND There are differences in the literature regarding outcomes of premature small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and appropriate-for gestational-age (AGA) infants, possibly due to failure to take into account gestational age at birth. OBJECTIVE To compare mortality and respiratory morbidity of SGA and AGA premature newborn infants. DESIGN/METHODS A retrospective study was done of the 2,48...

Comparative Study of Cord Lipid Profile in Small for Gestational Age and Appropriate for Gestational Age Newborn

Background: This study was conducted to compare the cord blood lipid profile in term small for gestation (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies as determination of cord blood lipid profile is useful screening tool for early detection of babies at higher risk as atherosclerosis has its genesis in childhood. Methods: Study Design: Hospital based cross sectional study. Setting: ne...

Omphalitis in term and preterm appropriate for gestational age and small for gestational age infants.

To determine whether there is a difference on the historical and clinical characteristics of omphalitis among term and preterm appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and small for gestational age (SGA) infants, we prospectively investigated 85 newborns with bacteriologically proved omphalitis. Study groups were based on gestational age and being SGA. Preterm AGA infants had significantly lower m...

Outcome of small-for-gestational age and appropriate-for-gestational age infants born before 27 weeks of gestation.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the consequences of being small-for-gestational age at extremely low gestational age. METHODOLOGY Comparison of two historical cohorts of small-for-gestational age (SGA) and appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants born between 24 and 26 6/7 weeks of gestation (gestational age estimated by early ultrasound at 16 to 18 weeks). Data were collected retrospectively on 1...

Comparison of late-second-trimester nonstress test characteristics between small for gestational age and appropriate for gestational age infants.

OBJECTIVE To compare electronic fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring characteristics between appropriate for gestational age (AGA) fetuses and small for gestational age (SGA) fetuses and to determine whether SGA fetuses have specific abnormalities at second-trimester electronic fetal monitoring (EFM), using nonstress test. METHODS Among 953 children born from 1993-1996, we identified 500 singlet...
